The TurkStream Project is being planned and developed by Gazprom. It will provide reliable energy supplies for Turkey and south-east Europe, by providing a direct connection to the large reserves of natural gas in Russia. It will consist of an offshore section through the Black Sea and two onshore pipelines to transport the gas to the Turkish grid and other European markets. The project has been conceived to replace an older gas delivery system that runs through Ukraine. A lack of investments and modernisation over the years have rendered the existing system unreliable.
The special purpose vessels Iskatel and Heather Sea continue to actively work on the research part of the project.
